WASHINGTON (June 17, 2019) - Mayor Muriel Bowser and Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Brian Kenner awards Coffy Cafe with the 2019 Great Streets Small Business Grant.

The cozy, two-level cafe nestled in the Tivoli Center of Columbia Heights was one of 17 small businesses in Ward 1 to receive this year’s grant. For many, the cafe is warm and inviting bringing together native Washingtonians, college students, entrepreneurs, and new residents for crepes and coffee. However, owner Yahya Sardari believes there is more that can be done to support the community and its rich history of music and culture.

“We’re truly honored to receive this grant from Mayor Bowser’s office and look forward to fulfilling our commitment to creating a thriving community within the 14th Street Corridor,” says Sardari.

Since Sardari took ownership in 2015, there has been minimal changes to the menu that serves more than a dozen original style of crepes or its Mod and 60’s aesthetics. In fact, it’s original style and premier location is unlike any other coffee shop in the city. Today it remains a needed minority-owned locale serving its growing and diverse clientele. Sardari now plans to add more of his own inspiration to the existing offerings, invest in structural upgrades, and forge more community partnerships that support local issues such as hunger and homelessness.
